about

This was the first song I wrote after completing my debut album, Reinventing the Dumbass. Since revisiting it, and having Justin Sapp and Matt Webster work on it, it has become one of my favorite songs in my catalog.

lyrics

I peeled out of heaven
with some bottle on my breath
I made a stop down in Southern MN
the was the last place that I'd been
before I sold my soul for rock and roll
then traded the rest for booze and blow
I was almost someone famous
I almost wrote some songs you'd know

I've been running my whole life
spending years chasing a perfect night
laughing with the sinners
watching the girls pass
where'd all the time go I once had

I sat some time in county
was waiting to get shipped back up state
I sang the blues out of that court room
I waited a long time for this date
Yeah, I feel the summer calling me
asphalt beneath the tire's screech
I would steer clear forever
for just one summer of 69

I've been running my whole life
spending years chasing a perfect night
laughing with the sinners
watching the girls pass
where'd all the time go I once had

I've got this fire deep inside of me
that is slowly smoldering out
replacing the days with a haze
and a foggy glaze
that's clouded any other way
yeah, I feel these evenings burning me
like these parties could finally be
the last ones
so say goodbye
to all of the girls
and all the things
that I've done wrong

I've been running my whole life
spending years chasing a perfect night
laughing with the sinners
while the girls
and the time
go by

I've been running my whole life
spending years chasing a perfect night
laughing with the sinners
watching the girls pass
where'd all the time go I once had

I've been running my whole life
spending years chasing a perfect night
laughing with the sinners
watching the girls pass
where'd all the time go I once had
